Dragon, or  'Lun' as pronounced in Chinese,  plays a very important role in Chinese culture and myth. Unlike in western where dragons are taken as destructive symbols, dragons in the orient, especially in China, are benevolent, honorable and life-saving. Legend has it that China's first Emperor who had a dragon tail, was transformed from a dragon.  Thereafter, the image of dragon became the emblem of the emperors and gradually it is taken as the symbol of strength and power by the general public. Phoenix, queen of the birds, or 'Feng Huang' , as pronounced in Chinese, is  the legendary immortal bird and known for her beauty. Its feathers have colorful designs conveying different symbols. The designs on its head represents virtue, on it wings, justice, on its back, courtesy, on its chest, benevolence and on its belly, faith.   Dragon and Phoenix are two of the 'Four Spiritually Endowed Creatures' in the Chinese legends and are widely used in celebrations such as  births and marriages where in birth, dragon symbolizes a new-born strong and healthy boy, phoenix, a new-born healthy and pretty girl, and in marriage, usually dragon and phoenix together, symbolizes a perfect match and the prosperity and happiness the union is to bring.
