An old 4 layers rectangular mutton fat reticulate nephrite pendant with, well hollowed in between, meticulously carved and pierced, a lucky bat stretching its wings atop on both sides, on one side, two phoenixes flanking a centering Chinese character 壽 in pierced pattern, which means longevity, on the other side, denoting two birds resting leisurely under a prune tree. A collectible demonstrating super example of excellent craftmanship.

Old Nephrite Jade Pendant - Monk Jiong

A very unique charcoal black jadeite pendant carved as a cicada
crouching on a leafy bamboo bough . The cicada is very well carved with fine details in
folded wings with incised body lines. The reverse is incised with vein
of the leaf. Ancient Chinese regarded cicada as the symbol of
immortality. The cicada is vividly carved in details with folded wings,
protrusive eyes and other body lines. Because of its life history,
cicada is regarded as a symbol of resurrection. The lava works its way
into the earth, and, after a long subterranean existence of many years,
emerges to the surface in the pupa stage from which the cicada is
transformed. The re-birth of the cicada also symbolizes the re-birth of
the mortals. It is said cicada brings longevity to its owner.
