Burmese Jade Pendant - Monk Lohan
A solid jadeite well carved to depict a Lohan and an archaic dragon below his feet. Legend says a monstrous dragon was subjudgated by Lohan and became his ride. Lohan is one the Buddha's 16 disciples. All the 16 Lohans are said to have great wisdom and supernatural power to ward off the evil. They became the guardian angels of the Buddhist temples and now taken as symbols to suppress demons. The sculpture is possibly an early Republican work at about 1920
